SUNDAY UPDATE: Smoky conditions to return to Lake County this afternoon We expect smoke to return to parts of Lake County this afternoon and linger until tomorrow. Previously we had called for the air quality advisory for the area to end on Saturday, but conditions have changed since then. We will post more updates on Monday. A shift in winds has brought wildfire smoke into parts of SW Curry County (near Brookings) and the Linn/Marion County line (near Lyons and Mill City). This smoke will dissipate later today. Smoke will return to SW Oregon tomorrow morning and could likely impact Curry and Josephine Counties for part of the day before clearing out. Our team will be monitoring it and posting updates as needed. Although air quality is fluctuating, an air quality advisory remains in effect for Jackson, Klamath, and Deschutes counties. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality on Tuesday launched a podcast called GreenState , and the show's first episodes focus on wildfire smoke and air quality. In the “Where There’s Smoke” series, GreenState looks at the past, present and future of air quality and wildfire smoke in light of recent smoky summers throughout Oregon. The first two episodes are available through SoundCloud and most anywhere you get your podcasts, and the third episode will be available in mid-September. DEQ public affairs specialists Lauren Wirtis and Dylan Darling host GreenState and will use the podcast to take deep dives into issues that affect the quality of Oregon’s air, land and water. One puts protections in place against the hazards of wildfire smoke. Another establishes safeguards against high heat in employer-provided housing. The wildfire smoke rule encompasses a variety of exposure controls, training and information, and other measures. The heat rule applies to occupants of housing provided by employers. It requires access to cooling areas and other steps to minimize dangerous heat in housing units. Both rules take effect Aug. 9 and remain in effect for 180 days.
