August 16 Air Quality Report for Rail Fire -- Weather and Smoke Synopsis
Fire behavior was very active yesterday
during the late day and into the late night due to warmer and drier
conditions, poor overnight humidity recoveries, and a strong night time
thermal belt. Fire activity is
expected to be the same today as temperatures will be warmer with a moderate
increase of stability. Transport winds
are expected to be out of the west then shifting to the northwest after
4:00PM. Surface
inversion is predicted to lift around 11:00 AM. Crews today will patrol and mop-up the
north, east and south lines of the fire.
Fire crews are still prepping the westside of the fire in preparation
for future burn-outs when conditions allow.
Most growth yesterday was due to the main fire growing into burnout
lines. Unity conditions in the
morning will vary from Very Unhealthy to Hazardous smoke levels but will become a Good to Moderate level around 12:00PM.
Baker City, Burns, John Day, Prairie
City and Vale will have Good
smoke levels today. Prairie City and
John Day may have Moderate smoke
conditions early in the morning. Expect
smoke settling in overnight.
