Aug. 20 Air Quality Report for Rail Fire -- Weather and Smoke Synopsis

Warm and dry conditions continue today.   Light upslope winds are expected 3-6 mph becoming up-valley in the afternoon.    Transport winds are expected to be out of the North-Northwest.  Surface inversion is predicted to lift in Unity around 10:00 AM.  Mop-up and patrol is in place on the East, North, and West perimeters.  Most of the activity seen yesterday was due to the interior burning.  Preparations continue for operations in the southern end of the fire.  The fire is now 30% contained at 29,880 acres.   Unity conditions in the morning will be Unhealthy  smoke levels improving only to Moderate for the afternoon and evening.  Baker City, Burns, John Day, Vale and Prairie City  will have Good smoke levels today.  Expect smoke settling into the drainages overnight.
