Oregon Gulch fire at 42 percent containment

Crews on the Oregon Gulch fire have mopped up as much as 200 feet along parts of the fire's western perimeter.

As of 9 p.m. Wednesday, fire officials reported the 36,568-acre blaze, which started on the eastern edge of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument after a July 30 lightning storm, is 42 percent contained, with a line drawn around the fire's full perimeter. About seven miles of hoses have been brought in to help with mop-up operations on the fire's north and northeastern edges. Contingency fire lines are being built outside the perimeter.

The Level 2 evacuation advisory for residents of the 6000 block of Highway 66 south to the Oregon border on Copco Road has been reduced to Level 1. In Klamath County, the Klamath River Canyon from the John C. Boyle Dam to the California border has been downgraded to a Level 1 evacuation.

The fire is part of the Beaver Complex, which includes the lightning-sparked Salt Creek Fire that also broke out July 30. That fire is 95 percent contained and remains at 155 acres.
