Ashland this morning with wildfire smoke obscuring the view of Grizzly Peak.   We know a number of you have questions about masks and whether they provide good protection when air quality worsens. First, let’s stress that the most effective ways people can protect themselves is to limit exposure. More on that in a bit. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you’re considering a mask: Surgical masks and bandanas don’t filter fine particles. N95 respirators are not reliable unless they are fit-tested by a certified professional to ensure they are effective. Otherwise, their use might just create a false sense of security. If you want to use an N95 masks, you need to get fit testing done, so that you can be sure it’s protecting you. Formal fit-testing and training in proper use of respirators aren’t generally available to the public. Smoke from wildfires is affecting air quality in Bend, which is currently unhealthy for sensitive groups or orange. Colleagues in our Bend office and a follower on Twitter have mentioned the smoky conditions worsening throughout the morning. Air quality was good until around 7 a.m. when it inched into moderate or yellow territory, which is unhealthy for extremely sensitive groups. Readings from 10 and 11 a.m. this morning were both orange. Readings in Sisters and Prineville were both moderate at 11 a.m. and noon. Much of the smoke is coming from wildfires in the southwest part of the state. Forecasts call for clearing tonight and for the smoke to return in the morning. Forecasts also show clearing again tomorrow night. Smoke levels can fluctuate rapidly and affect even neighboring areas quite differently so remember to check  air quality conditions  before you head out. Medford, OR—The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality issued an air quality advisory today for Jackson, Josephine and Klamath counties, which are being impacted by smoke from a number of wildfires. DEQ and county health officials are urging residents to take precautions from wildfire smoke. With high temperatures and thunderstorms in the forecast that could spark more wildfires, conditions are expected to last at least through Thursday. Air quality readings in Shady Cove, Ashland, Medford and Klamath Falls were all very unhealthy (purple) at points on Monday morning, with Shady Cove reaching hazardous levels. Air quality readings in Grants Pass and Provolt were unhealthy or red. An unhealthy or red reading on the Air Quality Index means that everyone may begin to experience health effects and everyone should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors.
